ABOUT NICL – NATIONAL INSURANCE COMPANY LIMITED

The National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) is India’s oldest general insurance company, established in 1906 in Kolkata during the Swadeshi movement to provide indigenous insurance services. Today, it operates as a wholly owned Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Finance, serving millions of policyholders across India and Nepal.

NICL offers a wide range of non‑life insurance products, including health insurance, motor insurance, property insurance, marine and aviation coverage, crop insurance, and engineering insurance. It plays a vital role in supporting individuals, businesses, and farmers by providing financial protection against risks and uncertainties.

In 1972, NICL was nationalized under the General Insurance Business Nationalisation Act, merging with several Indian and foreign insurers. Later, in 2002, it was de‑linked from the General Insurance Corporation (GIC) and became an independent PSU.

With a strong network of over 850 offices and a workforce of more than 7,600 employees, NICL has built a reputation for trust and reliability. It actively participates in government social security schemes and has introduced innovative initiatives like Insurance‑on‑Wheels to expand financial inclusion.

Despite facing financial challenges in recent years, NICL remains a pillar of India’s insurance sector, combining over a century of legacy with modern services and nationwide reach.
